🧱 How to Add Blocking Behind Drywall
Install solid backing inside your wall for things like shelves, TVs, or towel bars — even after the drywall is already up.
🧰 Tools & Materials Needed:
Stud finder
Drill or impact driver
3” wood screws
Drywall saw or oscillating multi-tool
Measuring tape & pencil
2x4 or plywood blocking piece
Wood glue or construction adhesive (optional)
Drywall patch material (piece of drywall or patch kit)
Joint compound, putty knife, sandpaper
🕒 Estimated Time: 45–90 minutes
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions:
1. Mark the Area for Blocking
Use a stud finder to locate the studs near your target area
Mark your desired mounting height (e.g., where a TV or shelf will go)
Lightly draw a square or rectangle cutout large enough to fit your hand and blocking
2. Cut Into the Drywall
Carefully cut the marked opening using a drywall saw or multi-tool
Save the piece if possible for patching later
Vacuum the edges to remove any dust
3. Measure and Prepare Your Blocking
Cut a 2x4 or piece of plywood to fit horizontally between studs
For heavy loads (like TVs), use a full 2x4
Add glue to the ends (optional) and secure into the adjacent studs with screws
4. Secure the Blocking in Place
Insert the blocking into the wall cavity
Use screws through the existing studs at each end to secure it
Double-check that it sits flush with the back of the drywall
5. Patch the Wall
Replace your drywall piece or use a new patch
Apply joint compound around edges, smooth it out with a putty knife
Let dry, sand, and apply a second coat if needed
Prime and paint to match the surrounding wall
✅ Pro Tips:
Use painter’s tape around your cut area to protect the finish
Always mount items directly to blocking or studs — drywall alone won’t hold long
If this seems like a big job, consider pre-installing blocking during your next reno project
