We love DIYers—but let’s be honest, not all drywall repairs go as planned. Over the years, R&G Walls has been called in to fix a lot of drywall disasters across Ottawa, and many of them could’ve been avoided with the right tools, knowledge, or a quick phone call.
In this post, we’re breaking down the most common drywall mistakes we see (and fix), plus real stories from jobs we’ve rescued. If you’re tackling your own drywall project, this might save you time, money, and a major headache.
🚫 Mistake #1: Skipping Primer After a Repair
The Problem: You patch a hole, paint right over it, and boom—it flashes. The repair shows through the paint like a shiny patch.
Fix: We prime all repaired areas with high-quality drywall primer to seal and blend the surface perfectly.
Ottawa Example: A client in Barrhaven repainted a whole room before realizing every patch showed through. We re-primed and repainted only the affected areas, saving them from a full repaint.
🚫 Mistake #2: Using the Wrong Tape
The Problem: Some people use mesh tape for inside corners—or even packing tape (yes, really).Fix: We use paper tape for corners and mesh for flat seams, applied with proper mud to avoid bubbles and cracks.
Ottawa Example: A DIY job in Orleans used mesh tape in corners. It cracked within weeks. We cut it out, re-taped, and skim coated for a clean, durable finish.
🚫 Mistake #3: Over-sanding
The Problem: Sanding too aggressively can damage the drywall paper, leaving fuzzy spots that ruin the paint finish.
Fix: We feather and polish using light pressure and high-quality sanding sponges to avoid damaging the surface.
🚫 Mistake #4: Not Mixing Mud Properly
The Problem: Lumpy or dry joint compound leads to lines, ridges, and air pockets.
Fix: We always mix compound to the right consistency with paddle mixers and apply it evenly with the right knife size for each coat.
🚫 Mistake #5: Trying to Patch Large Holes with Spackle
The Problem: Lightweight spackle is only for tiny nail holes—not for holes the size of your fist.
Fix: For larger areas, we cut and install new drywall pieces, tape the seams, and apply multiple coats of mud for a seamless finish.
Ottawa Example: One client in Westboro tried to use wall filler on a broken corner. We installed a new corner bead and rebuilt the edge with proper support.
🚫 Mistake #6: Painting Too Soon
The Problem: If you paint before the mud is fully dry—or skip sanding—it can lead to bumps, uneven paint, or even peeling.
Fix: We allow full drying time between coats and use fans or heaters when needed. No shortcuts.
🚫 Mistake #7: Underestimating the Time It Takes
The Problem: Many homeowners think drywall is a one-day job. But with drying times, sanding, and multiple coats—it’s usually a 2–3 day process.
Fix: We schedule properly, communicate the timeline, and deliver consistent, professional results—without dragging the job on.
